"Extreme, unstoppable physical force and power expressed through
defined lines and almost subliminal curves – this is Lawrence
Walker’s work".
"His pieces sell by first impression. The dramatic dominance of
his work never fails to illicit reaction and his unique creative
style and passion never fails to appeal."
Lawrence loves what he does. Taking huge chunks of steel,
heating them to almost white heat then forging and forming them,
manipulating and exploiting the temporary plasticity that extreme
heat provides is a captivating and extremely rewarding experience.
The design resource is predominantly organic taking inspiration
from plant forms and natural elements along with mechanical and
geometric constructions; the contrast between these properties
produces a synergy that allows the ironwork a natural aesthetic
development and allows exploration within the restrictions of the
technical processes.

If the metal is allowed to move naturally and not forced into
shape then the resultant forms can hold a grace and elegance that
retains a measure of the working process. A piece of inanimate
metal transformed into something living and beautiful.
The ability to control the complex relationships between the
tooling and techniques, and the resultant ironwork is the key to
the design style. The finished pieces are cold, hard, immovable
steel, and yet the viewer is hopefully aware of a seemingly
inexplicable fluidity and movement.
Since graduating from Hereford College of Art and Design with
BA (Hons) Design Crafts, Lawrence Walker has fulfilled many
prestigious commissions: the city centre refurbishment in Hereford, the City Arcade gate in Worcester, the
town centre piazza in Leatherhead, the landmark flower sculpture in
Dudley and numerous private commissions for the rich and famous to
name but a few! |
